A recent report from the US-based cybersecurity firm Resecurity has asserted that the personal information of approximately 815 million, equivalent to 81.5 crore Indians, has been exposed on the dark web, as reported by Business Standard. This data breach includes details such as names, phone numbers, addresses, Aadhaar, and passport information, which are being offered for sale online.

In a blog post, Resecurity disclosed, “On October 9th, an individual using the alias ‘pwn0001’ initiated a thread on Breach Forums, offering access to a staggering 815 million records of ‘Indian Citizen Aadhaar & Passport.'” It’s worth noting that India’s entire population exceeds 1.486 billion people.

The company further stated that its HUNTER (HUMINT) unit’s investigators, who made contact with the threat actor, discovered that they were willing to sell the entire Aadhaar and Indian passport database for $80,000. According to media reports, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently probing the breach, which was first identified by the hacker known as “pwn0001.”

Additionally, a report from News18 suggests that the compromised data might originate from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) database. An individual on X has also shared, “Unknown hackers have leaked the personal data of over 800 million Indians affected by COVID-19. The leaked data includes names, father’s names, phone numbers, other numbers, passport numbers, Aadhaar numbers, and ages.”

This incident marks not the first instance of data breach in India. Earlier in June, the government launched an investigation into a data breach, following the alleged leak of personal data from vaccinated citizens, including VVIPs, via a Telegram messenger channel on the CoWin website. This data breach claim represents a significant challenge for the government, which has been actively pursuing digital transformation and has established a digital public infrastructure (DPI) based on the biometric identification number Aadhaar, mobile numbers, and bank accounts as the foundation for the delivery of benefits and fostering innovation in the private sector.
